Martin Huxter was born in Great Wakering, Essex, in 1960. He studied Art at Southend Technical College and Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham. Before returning to the UK in 2011 he lived in Vienna where he organized several themed exhibitions combining art with poetry, featuring the work of artists and poets from a number of different countries.

In 2011 he moved to North Yorkshire where he is currently working on several long-term painting projects and an illustrated book of poems about birds. The techniques and subjects can vary considerably but oil on canvas is a favourite method and the natural world, still life and portraiture are his main interests. Using historical sources of inspiration – both stylistic and thematic – is typical of Huxter’s approach.

Huxter’s work has been shown in many exhibitions including the BP Portrait Award; the Jerwood Drawing Prize; and the John Moores Painting Exhibition where he was a prizewinner.

Huxter’s poetry has appeared in several anthologies and in 2007 his poem Last Glimpse of Kim Shine was the runner-up at the People and Places Prize sponsored by Aesthetica Magazine and Vienna Lit Festival. More recently, Huxter’s poem The Pequod was awarded first prize at the 3am Project organised by It’s Not Your Birthday But… and the Surrey History Centre.
